Solid Glass Owl

Viking Glass Company of New Martinsville, WV, made a great variety of glass objects over the years. It began as the New Martinsville Manufacturing Company in 1900. From 1944 to 1987, it was Viking Glass Company. In 1987 when the plant was purchased, it was renamed Dalzell-Viking Glass. The facility had three furnaces fueled by natural gas which produced approximately 5 tons of glass per day. In 1998 the company entered into bankruptcy. As with so many of the West Virginia glass companies, their products now are collectibles, because they are no longer made and are available only on the secondary market when and if one can find them.

This glass owl is solid, colorless glass — some might say “crystal.” This is solid and heavy, so could function as a bookend or a paperweight. It is about 7 inches tall by 4.25 inches wide and about 1.75 inches deep at the thickest point.
